For the first time ever, Milwaukee Public Museum‘s beloved Streets of Old Milwaukee have been decorated for fall and Halloween. You should check ’em out!
Stroll through the 1900s-era streetscape exhibit and you’ll find leaves littering the ground, mannequins sporting old-timey Halloween gear, and windows teeming over with vintage Halloween paraphernalia from MPM’s collection. Even the iconic Granny has gotten in on the action, leaving her front porch and kicking it with her Halloween-happy granddaughter inside the house. (Maybe best to stay inside, Granny.)
“Halloween decorations at the turn of the 20th century were creative and creepy, but far less elaborate and gory than what we see today,” says Nancy Kruschke, MPM’s Exhibit Maintenance Specialist & Artist, in a previous press release. “How-to books encouraged people to create their own decorations using supplies they had around the house. Crepe paper was also a popular material for decorations and used to create colorful streamers, life-size cornstalks, wall artwork and more.”
The seasonal touches will be on display through November 4. And because no article about the Milwaukee Public Museum would be complete without it: yes, they’re still building a new museum; yes, the new museum is expected to open in early 2027; yes, the current museum will remain open until then; no, the Streets of Old Milwaukee won’t be moved to the new museum; but yes, they plan to replace it with a “spiritual successor” called Milwaukee Revealed.
tl;dr: Visit MPM and the Streets of Old Milwaukee today! Visit MPM and the Streets of Old Milwaukee often! You only have a few years left!
