Back in April, Milwaukee Public Museum began its first round of “deinstallation.” This involved packing up items and closing off (small) sections of the museum in preparation for the big move to the new Nature & Culture Museum of Wisconsin in early 2027. On Friday, MPM shared further deinstallation updates for the upcoming weeks and months. Buckle up.
“Over the next few weeks, a small number of objects currently on display will be gradually deinstalled,” MPM said in a press release. “Since many of these objects have been on display for decades, they need to be cleaned, repaired (if necessary), and carefully packed ahead of the move.”
So what items are being deinstalled? “Our team will begin deinstalling items from the Second Floor’s Nampeyo case and Third Floor’s Ainu case starting next Tuesday, August 19,” said MPM.
But perhaps more significantly, some taxidermy will be removed from several dioramas. “Beginning in September, we will be removing taxidermy from the Third Floor’s Watering Hole diorama as well as the nearby cheetah,” said MPM. “On the Second Floor, we will be removing taxidermy from the Prairie diorama.”
Damn. We loved that cheetah.
MPM reminds folks that while these deinstalled items “will be off view until the Nature & Culture Museum of Wisconsin opens in 2027, you’ll be able to see them all again in our new Living in a Dynamic World gallery. This gallery will help showcase stories of people, plants, and animals across a variety of vibrant landscapes.”
Just don’t touch this one, MPM.
