Depending on which news sources you follow, Milwaukee is going through either a “renaissance” or a “reinvention.” However you want to define it, it’s safe to say that Milwaukee is currently building a lot of new and wonderful things! Here are some of them, brought to you by GTG Home Buyers!
• We’re headed north to Whitefish Bay for our first new wonderful thing: a “vibrant entertainment and event hub” called The Argo, planned for the closed-since-2020 Fox Bay Cinema at 334 E. Silver Spring Dr.
The $7.5 million proposal to transform the vacant theater into a multi-purpose venue comes from New Land Enterprises, which owns the building. According to a press release, The Argo would include:
• Entertainment Hall: A midsize venue hosting concerts, comedy shows, and movie nights.
• First Floor: Bar and restaurant with craft beverages and elevated, approachable fare
• Second Floor: Private event space designed for weddings, fundraisers, and more.
“Led by a team of experienced industry professionals with extensive expertise in live entertainment, venue management, and marketing, The Argo will feature a carefully curated mix of local and national acts,” reads the press release.
If approved by Whitefish Bay (the proposal comes complete with an ask for some grant money and development incentives), The Argo could open as soon as fall 2025. [Milwaukee Journal Sentinel]
• J. Jeffers & Co. plans to build a seven-story, full-block apartment complex in the Deer District, and MATC plans to lease the athletic training facilities in the building’s lower levels. The housing section will include 269 market-rate apartments. Construction could begin this summer. [Urban Milwaukee]
• Construction is set to begin this spring on a 32-story, 378-unit apartment tower called The Edison, located along the Milwaukee River at 1005 N. Edison St. [Milwaukee Journal Sentinel]
• Plans are afoot to “winterize” American Family Field, as well as “create spaces for fans to enjoy games and concerts in festival-like environments.” [Milwaukee Journal Sentinel]
• Plans are also afoot to build a teen center called Teen-n-Out at 1950 W. Hampton Ave. [Urban Milwaukee]
• The drama over “re-imagining” Highway 175—a.k.a. the Stadium Freeway—continues. (Note: This is not to be confused with the drama over “re-imagining” Interstate 794.) This April, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation plans to unveil three redesign options that would convert the highway into a boulevard. [FOX 6]
• A Buc-ee’s coming to Oak Creek? Despite some neighborhood objection (“I am also terrified of the trafficking issues and everything else that I don’t even know if I can trust my kids to be outside alone to play in their backyard because I’m not going to have 120 pump gas station in my backyard,”) there’s probably a Buc-ee’s coming to Oak Creek. • Speaking of Oak Creek, Master Lock is closing its corporate headquarters there and moving the jobs to Illinois. [Wisconsin Public Radio]
