Social media possesses the power to bring the world together. Unfortunately, it’s also an effective tool that’s used to tear us apart and—through follower counts, incessant marketing, and everyone now having the ability to post manicured updates of living their best life—is a source of jealousy and a means of making people feel inferior to others in their digital orbit. Such social media pitfalls take center stage (or center field?) in the just-released music video for the brand new Gold Steps single.
“I’ve had my share of spirals; it’s how the system is designed to work,” Gold Steps vocalist Betty Mauritz says in a press release. “It’s tailored to make you want what you don’t have, so you spend money on ads for your page or products to make you look better, or spend even more time on the platform in the pursuit of that goal. And all you initially wanted was to connect with people and reach new fans.”
Despite the song’s weighty subject matter, the instrumental direction on “Jealousy” is disproportionately uptempo, inviting, and catchy. The song also gets a fun and lively video treatment from frequent Gold Steps visual collaborator Edward Curran, who films the band taking the diamond at First And Bowl in Wauwatosa. As the rest of Gold Steps face off against their friends and upcoming tourmates in Chicago-based band When The Sun Sets, Mauritz eventually escapes the social media-prompted trance and rejoins the other players for a memorable day at the ballpark. Oh, and there are pocket pancakes.
Before Gold Steps play a steady diet of shows in an around Milwaukee this spring and summer (including the Milwaukee Record beer release event at Ope! Brewing Co. on April 2), check out the “Jealousy” music video below. And speaking of social media, maybe give Golds Steps a follow on Instagram and TikTok if you haven’t already!
