How do you follow up a six-track EP of moody, emotional, heart-on-its-sleeve, polished-to-a-sheen indie-rock called City Of Light, Act I? If you’re Milwaukee band 5pm To Nowhere, you release a four-track EP of moody, emotional, heart-on-its-sleeve, polished-to-a-sheen indie-rock called City Of Light, Act II, of course.

Maybe “indie-rock” doesn’t properly describe 5pm To Nowhere’s ambitions here. On Act II opener “Clouds Break,” the band mixes shimmering guitars and haunting vibes reminiscent of ’00s groups like the Editors and gives them an arena-ready reach. “Saltpeter (The Right Way)” packs up the guitars and delivers a lovely piano ballad that explodes in its final moments. Ditto closer “Invisible Man,” a nearly six-minute cinematic journey that really explodes in its final moments. “One More Chance,” meanwhile, takes a step back into the jangly-guitar ’90s for the EPs most upbeat moment.

City Of Light, Act I was released back in February; Act II will see its release Friday, August 22 at a free show at On Tap. (Colorado band Tarantula Bill will play in support.) Before that release, listen to the new EP now, only on Milwaukee Record. And get those arenas ready.
