Some Milwaukee things come and go while some become icons. Mandatory Milwaukee is all about the latter. This week: eating hot dogs in bars.
Milwaukee is blessed with hundreds upon hundreds of bars within its borders. Beyond their primary function as places to obtain and consume drinks, bars also exist as so-called “third spaces” where the public is able to spend time in the company of fellow humans, play games, watch sports, read, listen to music, and partake in an untold number of other activities that help to enrich and improve the overall quality of one’s life. Oh, and you can also get hot dogs at bars sometimes.
We’re not going to be so bold to declare bars with hot dogs to be a “Milwaukee thing,” but have you ever noticed there’s no shortage of local watering holes that give customers the opportunity to take down a hot dog while enjoying a beverage within their walls? We have!
What better way to entice a patron to stick around for another round (or two) than the promise of a savory tube of hot meat to enjoy between sips? And just as Milwaukee and its surrounding suburbs have an endless array of bar types, there’s a wide variety of ways one can obtain a red hot while enjoying a drink at a local bar.

Some local haunts add hot dogs into the equation on specific weekdays in an effort to drum up business on a typically slow day. For example, you might not be thinking of going to Mamie’s on a Monday if not for the availability of $2.50 dogs (and $2.75 chili dogs) and $5 mini pitchers.

Other establishments incorporate hot dogs into daily happy hour promotions, such as the newly opened Your Office. There, you can get $1 hot dogs every weekday from 3-5:30 p.m. During that same span of time, customers can get $2 pints of Hamm’s, and select shots (Cazadores, Tullamore D.E.W., and Fernet) for $3. Or do the hot dog, the beer, and a shot to complete a $6 “Three-Piece Suit” special.

And sometimes bars will just set customers up with a complementary hot dog. Emphasis on customers: a.k.a buy some drinks, tip your bartender, don’t hog the dogs, and don’t be a dick. The Newport often has hot dogs and a menagerie of condiments at the ready on Wednesday afternoons, for example. (No wonder it was named our Best Milwaukee Thing Of 2025!)

Other bars will serve up some dogs a crock pot for special occasions, such as Brewers Opening Day and Packers games. These are just a few of the many, many places and circumstances strengthening Milwaukee bar-and-hot dog connection.

On the exact opposite end of the spectrum, the city is also home to a growing number of businesses that specialize in top-notch dogs (and other tubed meats) and also happen to have a great selection of beer, spirits, and other libations. Places like The Vanguard, Camino, and Milwaukee Brat House each offer gourmet-caliber hot dogs on their menu daily, but also double as traditional bars. Unlike many of the counterparts mentioned already, the food is the main draw at these places, but you’re bound to get a drink or two with your order while you’re in the building.
At the end of the day, whether the presence of a hot dog is the primary motivation for paying a bar a visit or simply the reason you stay (and spend) a while longer isn’t really important. What really matters is you’re out in the world with other people, you’re supporting a local business during a particularly tough time, and you’re adding a dash of fun and relaxation to your life to help make existence at least a little more tolerable. The fact you’re able to wind up with a hot dog in the process is just an added bonus.
Cheers and bon appétit, Milwaukee!
