Some Milwaukee things come and go, while some become icons. Mandatory Milwaukee is all about the latter. This week: the Milwaukee Slugger at Pick ‘n Save.
It goes without saying that you always eat local. You make a point to patronize wonderful Milwaukee restaurants 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner, and bar-time pizza. The city is loaded with incredible culinary options, and even though it may not be cheap, it’s easy to be a Responsible Milwaukee Citizen and support the local dining scene.
Except when it’s not. Except when you’re at the grocery store and you’re hungry and you’re broke and you just want to stuff your face with a densely packed pre-made half-sub from the deli. Enter the Milwaukee Slugger, a densely packed pre-made half-sub available now at the Pick ‘n Save deli.
The lifetime stats on the Milwaukee Slugger are impressive: ham, hard and Genoa salami, cheddar and provolone cheese, lettuce, tomato, and onions on Gonnella twin French bread. BYO mayo. Total calories: 1,000. The little suckers typically weigh in at 11 oz, or .69 lb (nice). A fresh one will put you back $6.99. A day-old one is only $3.15. Cheap!
And yep, these things are dense. All of the above ingredients are packed in there. That density is what sets the Milwaukee Slugger apart from its nearest Pick ‘n Save deli cooler cousin, The B.O.S.S. Those things seem like they’re 20% meat and 80% bread. Better to go with a Slugger, even if it’s half the size of a B.O.S.S. It punches way above its weight. (Apologies for mixing sports metaphors.)
Speaking of Pick ‘n Save: Since the parent company of Pick ‘n Save, Roundy’s, is Milwaukee/midwest-based, could the Milwaukee Slugger be considered “local”? Hell, it’s called the MILWAUKEE Slugger, after all. When you’re tucking into a Slugger, are you tucking into a local sub?
Well, let’s not get carried away. Roundy’s has been a wholly owned subsidiary of Kroger for more than a decade. “Local” is kind of stretching it. Like the headline says, the Slugger is an “in-a-pinch” kind of deal. It’s no substitute for, say, the absolutely incredible American Sub at Hen’s Deli. Now that’s a local sub.
But still: the Slugger rules. It’s fresh, it’s filling, and it’s cheap. Here’s to the (Mandatory) Milwaukee Slugger. Call it the sub of summer.
