If you made it out to last night’s Milwaukee Record screening of UHF, we both thank you and want to remind you there’s plenty of Weird Al Week left. While we finishing out the theme week festivities, we’re also looking ahead to next month, which will feature an extra special “Hanksgiving” screening of the 1989 Joe Dante-directed masterpiece The Burbs at Avalon Theater on Wednesday, November 18. Tickets to the 7 p.m. screening are on sale NOW.

The ‘Burbs is a movie about a quiet suburban cul de sac. Mild-mannered Ray and Carol Peterson (Tom Hanks and Carrie Fisher) enjoy a peaceful existence alongside all of their quirky-yet-harmless neighbors, until a mysterious new family moves in next door. The Klopeks keep to themselves and have some odd habits, but might they be evil? Ray and pals do some snooping, smoke some cigars, and hang out with Ricky (played masterfully by Milwaukee Record superfan, Corey Feldman). There are shenanigans and misunderstandings, but certainly no evil. Or is there?

Hanks, Fisher, and Feldman deliver spectacular performances in this movie, but so does literally everyone else. Bruce Dern, Rick Ducommun, Henry Gibson, Brother Theodore, Nicky Katt, and many more come together to create a perfect lampoon of “people in the ‘burbs.”  Side note: Do yourself a favor and read up on Brother Theodore. He’s fascinating!

Like all our Avalon showings, this extra special screening is sponsored by our friends at Lakefront Brewery, Gruber Law Offices, and Skilos: A Family Pet Store. This time around, Skylight Music Theatre—which is hosting Big The Musical November 13 to December 27—is also sponsoring. Get in the “Hanksgiving” spirit and grab some tickets for our November 18 screening of The Burbs NOW!
