In this installment of our semi-regular Food/Drink Roundup: Hen’s Deli!
• Have you stopped in at Hen’s Deli lately? You know, the breakfast-and-lunch takeout spot that opened in the old Soup Bros. space at 209 W. Florida St. in late 2022? Back in early 2023, we told you Hen’s Deli was great. Now, more than three years later, we’re here to remind you that Hen’s Deli is still great. Seriously! Stop in!
We’re big fans of breakfast at Hen’s Deli. Here’s what we had to say about it in a 2025 Patreon post:
Owners Vivian Sotolongo and Lucas McDonald serve lunchtime subs at Hen’s Deli beginning at 10:30 a.m. Those sandwiches are great, but we’re partial to the all-day breakfast items—like the incredible Breakfast Bagel. Two eggs! Cheese! Bacon or sausage! IT’S SO GOOD. Toss in a cup of black coffee and you have everything you need to survive another long day of writing about Summerfest headliners and increasingly tagged and dilapidated boats.
Let’s talk more about those lunchtime subs. THEY’RE ALSO REALLY GOOD. We had an American Sub this afternoon ($16), and we can’t possibly compliment it enough. All-beef bologna, salami, American cheese, AND a light coating of potato chips on a soft roll? YES. Like we said before, stop in! You won’t regret it!

• Vegan bakery Hooch MKE is in the middle of some landlord woes, and it needs help finding a new home. “Your donation will help us get back on our feet to make this dream a reality again,” reads a GoFundMe page. “We are currently touring other potential spaces, shared commercial kitchens, and rejoining summer markets and events. We are exploring all options and determined not to let one person ruin the community we have worked so hard to build.”

• A random reminder that Bay View burger joint Patty Shack has not only closed, but was straight-up evicted from its location at 2121 S. Kinnickinnic Ave. The Utah-based fast-casual concept opened the location in 2023.

• A new location for Jamaican restaurant Pepperpot is planned for 1000 E. Locust St. The new restaurant would be carryout only; the location itself has seen 8,000 different places come and go in recent years (Kitchen Kings, Sticky Rice, Thai Lotus, Antonio’s Pizza, Milano Pizza, Packer’s Pizza And Chicken, more). Proposed opening date for the new Pepperpot: May 25, 2026. Which was two days ago. [PDF]
