Parking in Milwaukee during the winter! Yep, it’s that time of year again. Ugh. Here’s what you need to know:

• Winter parking rules are in effect from December 1 through March 1. Everything below applies to those dates.

• Rules posted on signs take precedent over any other rules. Read and follow any signs.

• When the city declares a “snow emergency,” alternate-side parking is in effect from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. (If it’s an even-numbered day at 10 p.m., you have to park on the side of the street with even-numbered addresses. If it’s an odd-numbered day at 10 p.m., you have to park on the side of the street with odd-numbered addresses.)

• When the city declares a “snow emergency,” you can’t park on major thoroughfares, highways, or bus routes from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Check to see if a street is considered a major thoroughfare, highway, or a bus route HERE.

• “Snow emergency” or not, you can’t park on major thoroughfares, highways, or bus routes from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. Again, check to see if a street is considered a major thoroughfare, highway, or a bus route HERE.

• Find out when “snow emergencies” are declared by signing up for text message notifications HERE. Find out via email HERE. You can also follow the Department of Public Works on Facebook and Twitter.

• That’s it! (The old “4-inch” rule is long gone.) Park smart, Milwaukee!
