If the 17 “first look” articles from other media outlets didn’t tip you off, Northwestern Mutual opened a new convenience store in Downtown Milwaukee on Monday. The so-called Mutual Market is located in the lobby of the Northwestern Mutual Tower and Commons, 805 E. Mason St. It’s open to both employees and the general public.
What can you get in there? Well, in addition to a deli and a coffee shop, there are shelves stuffed with all sorts of goodies: snacks, groceries, fruits and veggies, cheese, local coffee, locals beers, local apparel, toiletries, and more. Even Hot Pockets and ice cream for dogs!
We took the bus downtown to check out the Mutual Market for ourselves. As we were waiting, this happened. (And yes, you can find both Matt and Milwaukee Record on Bluesky now.)
Okay, here are the Mutual Market photos.
After ordering and eating a panini (it was fine), we wandered around downtown. We checked to see if a similar market, Downtown Kitchen, was still up and running in the U.S. Bank Center. Yep!
Next, we hopped on The Hop at the 411 East Wisconsin parking garage and took it to Burns Commons. Why not!
While waiting for the bus to get us back home (insert jokes about The Hop’s less-than-sprawling route HERE), we came across a Sculpture Milwaukee piece we totally blanked on this year. It’s called Real Estate For Birds?, and it’s by Jamaican-born artist Arthur Simms. It’s located in that empty lot just south of Jewish Museum Milwaukee, 1360 N. Prospect Ave.
We looked at it for a long time. It was nice. It felt good. We’ll take it.
