On Sunday morning, my family and I drove to Cedarburg to get breakfast at PJ Piper Pancake House. We had a lovely time, filling ourselves with pancakes and bacon and biscuits and gravy. (Fun fact: Because I’m 68 years old, I only recently discovered PJ Piper due to its commercials during Jeopardy.) Stuffed and sleepy, we drove home and got back to Milwaukee around 12:30 p.m. I tuned in the Brewers game on the radio and settled in on my living room couch for an early afternoon nap. Ah, Sundays. Ah, being 68 years old.

The game got off to a rough start. In my half-awake, half-asleep state, I half-listened as the Chicago White Sox beat up on your Milwaukee Brewers. The Sox scored four runs in the first inning, two in the second, and one more in the third. By the end of that third inning, they were up 7-2. Lane Grindle and Josh Maurer were quickly approaching “talk about some random bullshit” time-filler territory. Oh well. It’s a long season.

Around this time, my kid appeared and asked if she could turn off the radio and play video games on the living room TV. “Sure,” I yawned. “It sounds like the Brewers are going to lose.” Yeah, this game was already over. Also, my kid was near the end of her second play-through of Breath Of The Wild and I wanted to watch her beat Ganon.

Dear reader, those words, “It sounds like the Brewers are going to lose,” will haunt me until my dying day. Or at least until October.

Yes, in case you missed it, the Brewers ended up winning Sunday’s game. And not only did they win, they won in dramatic comeback fashion, beating the Sox 9-7. By now you’ve probably seen 8,000 videos of Christian Yelich and his towering go-ahead pinch-hit home run. By now you’ve probably read and re-read that terrific Milwaukee Journal Sentinel story about Sal Frelick yelling “Drag him!” from the dugout. By now you’ve probably been reminded that the Brewers won 97 regular-season games last year—a franchise record!—and that it felt like 94 of those games were dramatic come-from-behind wins.

“It sounds like the Brewers are going to lose”? What was I thinking?

So let my foolish and shameful error serve as a lesson for the rest of the 2026 season. Never, ever, under any circumstances, count out the Milwaukee Brewers. Never turn a game off early, never stop watching a game early, and—good grief—never leave a game early. This team was an absolute blast last year and it looks like it’ll be a blast again this year. Enjoy every inning, because every inning counts. It’s as simple as that. GO BREWERS.

And oh yeah, my kid beat Ganon, too.
