While Known Moons is a brand new project that only recently announced its existence to the world, many listeners in Milwaukee and far beyond are likely well aware of its members. The new outfit was founded by Milwaukee multi-instrumentalist Andrew James, who you might know from his work in Paper Holland and Flat Teeth or as a touring member of nationally-known indie acts M.A.G.S. and Oso Oso. Having fragments of songs that needed to be fleshed out, James called upon some friends and collaborators to help fill in some of those gaps and bring the material to life.
James enlisted the help of Silver City Studios co-owner Josh Evert—who also played in The Fatty Acids, Jaill, and his current endeavor Dinner Set Gang—and M.A.G.S. mastermind Elliott Douglas, who spent a week writing and recording material at Evert’s studio back in January. Today, the first of those songs has seen the light of day.
“By The Billions” is a warm, bouncy, and altogether enjoyable introduction to the young indie rock outfit. Complete with vibe-y and smooth guitar licks, toe-tapping rhythm, top-notch production, and soaring harmonies that further elevate an already catchy melody, James and company have announced the presence of Known Moons in a big way.
In addition to the track’s release, Known Moons also put out a Halloween-themed music video for “By The Billions” today. James tells Milwaukee Record the song will be followed by a few more singles in the coming months, culminating with the release of a five-song EP in early 2024. No live shows are planned at this point, but James hasn’t ruled performances out.
As we wait to hear what’s next from this great new recording project, we urge you to get acquainted with Known Moons by listening to “By The Billions” and watching the Ryan Reeve-shot/directed video for the song as soon as possible.
