Are you burnt out on your usual yoga classes, or looking for new ways to incorporate movement? Switch up your asanas and get into a new flow with one of these unconventional and/or unexpected Milwaukee-area yoga classes.

Adoptable Dog Yoga

Spend an hour practicing yoga with a dog—then maybe bring one home! Adorable dog yoga is a great chance to meet some pups looking for a loving home. You get the benefits of yoga while learning how a potential adoptee socializes with other people and animals. No intentions of adopting? That’s okay—spending an hour with some dogs is a great way to spend an afternoon!

Next adoptable dog yoga class: May 12 at 10 a.m. @ Salty Paws MKE

Aerial Yoga

There are several local organizations dedicated to the aerial movement. In some cases, this practice can share many qualities of yoga, but often it’s more aligned with dance or performing arts. At Reaching Treetops Yoga in Waukesha, the aerial yoga classes are a true blend of yoga and aerial arts, using gravity as a tool to complement a traditional yoga practice. Reaching Treetops even offers group events and private rentals for an ambitious group of friends.

Next aerial yoga class: April 27 at 10:15 or 11:30 a.m. @ Reaching Treetops Yoga

Candlelight Yoga

Take the benefits of a hot bath and an hour of movement work and you have candlelight yoga, a slowed-down, ultra-relaxing event. With only candlelight illuminating the studio, participants are invited to relax and work at their own pace. Most candlelight yoga classes are in the evening, so you can roll right from the studio to your bed.

Next candlelight yoga class: May 3 from 6-7:15 p.m. @ Healium Hot Yoga

Glow Yoga (Glowga)

Grab your glow-in-the-dark body paint and glow sticks for this rave-meets-yoga event. Recently, Canni-MKE and MKE Yoga Social hosted a “Purple Rain”-themed “glowga” to celebrate both 4/20 and the anniversary of Prince’s passing. Keep your eyes open for glowga events from different organizations—the next one from MKE Yoga Social isn’t until early fall.

Next glow yoga class: Rave Style Glowga Fundraiser for Light The Hoan, September 6, from 7-10 p.m. @ Riverfront Launching Site

Goat Yoga

You don’t need to head to Al Johnson’s to get a dose of goat. For five years, MKE Yoga Social and Platinum Sky Farm have hosted goat yoga at venues across the city. Much like dog yoga—or any other kind of animal yoga—baby goats roam the studio as guests participate in a 30-minute yoga session. Expect lots of breaks to cuddle with these baby dwarf goats, or see if you can finish your asanas with a goat on your back!

Next goat yoga class: May 3 at 5 or 6 p.m. @ Freight 38

Laughing Yoga

Is laughter the best medicine? Find out at a laughing yoga event, where participants are encouraged to incorporate laughter into their breathing exercises. There won’t be any comedians on site; instead, participants use voluntary laughter (a.k.a. making laughing noises) to get all the benefits of laughter during their yoga practice.

Next laughing yoga class: May 2 from 6-7:15 p.m. @ Healium Hot Yoga

Nude (or Nearly Nude) Yoga

Would you try a naked yoga class? Clothing-optional, “Bare As You Dare” classes don’t require full nudity, or even partial nudity, just whatever you are comfortable with and want to try in a body-positive space. The classes are often yin yoga, a slow, calm movement that encourages the release of stress and tension. Of course, no phones or cameras are allowed in class.

Next nude yoga class: April 25 at 7:45 p.m. @ MKE Yoga Studio

Punk Rock Yoga

Looking for yoga with a punk rock attitude and soundtrack? Then look no further than Healium’s regular Punk Rock Yoga classes at Cudahy’s X-Ray Arcade. BYO yoga mat!

Next punk rock yoga class: June 2 from 10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. @ X-Ray Arcade

Stand Up Paddle Board (SUP) Yoga

Check out Veterans Park, UWM Rec, Paddle Pewaukee, and other local orgs to get involved in a stand up paddle board (SUP) yoga class. With participants poised on an anchored paddle board, these classes are challenging but serene. Make sure you’re a competent swimmer and have experience on paddle boards before trying this class.

Next stand up paddle board yoga class: June 19 at 6 p.m. @ Pewaukee Lake

Yoga for Seniors

Yoga isn’t just a young person’s game—people of all ages can benefit from the movement practice. Increased mobility, increased stability, and increased flexibility are just a few of the physical benefits seniors can expect when starting a yoga practice. Oh, and add the social element and some boosted mind-body connection to boot! You can find yoga classes for seniors at several institutions, but the Milwaukee Turners host a free yoga class for seniors every Thursday from 11 a.m. to noon at Turner Hall.

Next yoga for seniors class: April 25 from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. @ Turner Hall
