Though Nate Kinsman has been releasing music under the Fellow Kinsman moniker since 2017, the South Dakota-born and Milwaukee-raised multi-instrumentalist really seemed to hit his stride coming out of the pandemic. In 2022, Kinsman’s “Land-Locked-Surf-Rock'” came into widespread local consciousness with the release of his sophomore album, Where Were You, that ably melds aspects of psych, indie, folk, and (yes) surf rock into something glistening, emotive, and genre-jumping.
With that aural access point established, Fellow Kinsman added more members into the mix and also became a Milwaukee live music fixture, including a steady smattering of festival slots, a headlining show at The Back Room @ Colectivo, and a spot on a stacked local bill that sold out Turner Hall in August 2023. While definitely present in the scene, Fellow Kinsman has gone quiet in terms of new recorded output over the past two and a half years. Until last week, that is.
On June 17, Kinsman and co. preceded summer’s arrival with the release of a brand new sun-soaked single that’s perfectly suited for the season. “Find A Way” kicks off with jangly guitars, a jaunty walking bass line, toe-tapping percussion, and swirling production accents that collectively exude a warm, welcoming vibe that mostly remains for the entirety of the song’s 4:37 run time. Kinsman’s vocals are equally light and affable throughout, but his lyrics tread into disproportionately heavy territory about a protagonist’s need to leave their current situation in search of something better.
“Find A Way” is the lead single from Fellow Kinsman’s forthcoming album, entitled Break Room, that will be released in October. You can hear the band play its new song (and much more) when they perform in support of Motel Breakfast at Falcon Hall on Friday, June 27. They’ll also play Chill On The Hill with De La Buena on Tuesday, August 26.
