What makes a low-rent horror movie from the past a good low-rent horror movie from the past? The kills, of course! Creative kills, gory kills, or kills where Jason just stuffs someone into a sleeping bag and slams them against a tree are what R-rated dreams/nightmares are made of.

Now, what makes a modern-day music video that’s inspired by low-rent horror movies from the past a good modern-day music video that’s inspired by low-rent horror movies from the past? The kills, yes, but also a dedication to shooting the thing on old MiniDV and VHS camcorders, and not just using a lousy “VHS” filter or whatever. And thus, enjoy the new video from Milwaukee indie/art-rock band Bunk Bed! It’s for the song “Crowd And Judgement,” and it’s good.

“Crowd And Judgement” comes from Bunk Bed’s 2022 two-song EP Top Bunk, Bottom Bunk. (A full-length record is expected in the near future.) The video was shot and directed by Michael Frank and Bunk Bed keyboardist Chris Ouchie—and yes, the shot it on old MiniDV and VHS camcorders. (A video for Top Bunk, Bottom Bunk‘s other song, “Bum,” was released in 2023.)

“The video shows the band enjoying doing the things they love on a beautiful Milwaukee day, while their murderous doppelgängers stalk them down and kill them in cold blood,” explains Bunk Bed. “After disposing of the bodies they head back to base to celebrate their fresh kills. However, someone accidentally flipped on the corpse re-animator and brought their victims back to life. Now, the newly undead band seeks their revenge on their killers, cutting the party short.”

Fun stuff! Wanna see the newly undead band live? Check them out Sunday, August 4 at X-Ray Arcade, where they’ll play with Allergen, Superglue, and In Shining Armour. Sorry, no creepy masks or deadly fishing poles will be allowed.
