It’s been a minute since we’ve checked in with Milwaukee’s premier drums-and-cello duo Nineteen Thirteen. It’s been so long, in fact, that Nineteen Thirteen isn’t even a duo anymore. A lot can happen in two years!
Yes, the duo that once was cellist Janet Schiff and drummer Victor DeLorenzo is now a trio. Schiff remains (as does her built-in-1913 cello), but she’s now joined by Renee Luna Bebeau on drums, and Jen Janviere on vocals. (The three musicians are also members of another band, Vox Starling.) The reconfigured trio has played out numerous times, but today, Nineteen Thirteen 2.0 is releasing its first single, “The Jaguar.”
The group’s new direction is clear within seconds: Janviere’s prominent vocals are cool and coiled, while Schiff and Bebeau’s instrumental backing subtly moves Nineteen Thirteen’s former chamber-rock sound into more moody murder-ballad territory. It’s a fantastic shift. Wild at heart, indeed.
Nineteen Thirteen has plenty of live dates on its schedule, including a show at Cactus Club March 26 (with The Fainting Room and Official Claire), and a show at Bar Centro May 22.
