Our friends at Awkward Nerd Events sure know how to keep busy. Throughout the year, the Milwaukee organization curates “nerdy” events and “geeky” gatherings that celebrate a wide range of interests. Though ANE happenings like Goblin King Masquerade Ball, Made In Nerdwaukee, and the Awkward Nerd Book Fair are well-established, the business is continually crafting new niche events along the way to add to its arsenal.

From noon to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 11, Awkward Nerd Events will add yet another thing to its ever-growing calendar with the inaugural Awkward Nerd Spelling Bee. Described as “a spelling bee with a geeky twist,” the event will find upwards of 25 individual spellers taking the stage at Cactus Club to test their spelling skills and their nerdy knowledge in a Bee like you’ve never seen before. Along the way, there will be opportunities for audience participation, sporadic spell-offs, and “general geekery” aplenty. Oh yeah, and Milwaukee Record will be on-site to moderate this first-year affair. Beyond the spelling entertainment itself, there will also be themed cocktails and mocktails, a free photobooth, and a food truck.

There will be 25 individual spots. Registration for those spots goes live at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 12. The cost to register is $20. All participants will receive a lanyard with name badge for the event. The winner will have their name engraved on the Official Awkward Nerd Spelling Bee trophy and will get a mini version of the trophy to take home. All other participants will also receive a Challenge Coin/medallion. Those who just wish to attend can do so for a $5 cover charge at the door.

S-A-V-E the -D-A-T-E. Awkward Nerd Spelling Bee will be buzzing at Cactus Club on Sunday, June 11. Bee there.
