Yo! I just built new garden beds, and I'm curious where everyone suggests buying soil in town. I also just thought it would be fun to start a gardening thread.
My main focus is always San Marzano Tomatoes! What is everyone else growing this year?
there's one or two bulk soil places on Howell just south of the airport. you can pick it up or they can deliver it. we also supplemented with miracle grow garden soil because it's only $2/bag right now at Home Depot (and I think $1 at tractor supply, but they're out in franklin I think). would love to use something like foxfarm but we're not made of money lol
definitely suggest filling your raised beds with cardboard, drainage rocks, logs, brush, leaves and all that to save money on soil too.
this is the first year we have a garden and we're being pretty ambitious. growing tons of herbs (raised beds, pots, and in-ground), 11 tomato plants (so far), at least a dozen peppers, cukes, green beans, cauliflower, zucchini, radishes, maybe lettuce. probably other stuff we pick up randomly. we also have 13 fruit trees so it's a lot of work.
don't forget to do a tick check when you come in from gardening. we've seen many already this season, it's crazy. tick tubes are next on the list.
We are terrible at gardening in my house so we rely on friends who have way too much at harvest time. 😉
@hot-hamski thanks for the detailed response! We ended up getting delivery from Bluemel's out in Greenfield. We moved so this is a new garden, but it will be my third year gardening in general. Good on you for doing the cardboard, brush, etc.
Fruit trees! That's a dream. I'm living in the city limits and I have just about enough space for two, 6 foot beds.
I've got six tomato plants in total. The other bed will have cucumbers, herbs, and some squash. I hope you have a bountiful season and at the very least, I hope you have fun doing it. It's the best "chore" there is.
@rasterweb Those are good friends to have! Additionally, we are also lucky to have the farmers markets.
There are also some great CSA farms in SE Wisconsin that deliver to neighborhoods within the city limits. Likely a little late to get in on it but something to keep in mind for the future!
Our neighbors do the CSA and we do get to the Enderis Park Farmers Market and sometimes the Wauwatosa Farmers Market when we can.
