WMSE‘s local and live in-studio showcase, Local/Live, airs Tuesdays 6-7 p.m. You can find past episodes HERE. Beginning in 2023, we’re also collecting episodes on a handy Soundcloud playlist.
CAL: Good evening, everybody. It’s Tuesday and it’s just after 6 p.m., which means it’s time for another edition of WMSE’s Local/Live program. My name is Cal, back in the studio with you this week. Sid is down at South by Southwest, so I’m flying solo.
My guest tonight: Lost Orange Cat. If that name doesn’t ring a bell for you, that’s because they’re a fairly new band. They started out, my impression is, around 2018, but we’ll get into some origin story stuff a little later. They just released their debut album last Friday. It’s called The Game Ain’t Played With Dice. They played a release show last Saturday at The Cooperage, and by all accounts it was a great time had by all.
The band consists of Josh Konkel on guitar and vocals, Joe Royten on mandolin, Daniel Rathmann on bass, and Kyle Ciske on drums. They’ve got an interesting sound. When I listened to the record I felt like, okay, I know what this is going to sound like, and then it keep introducing a lot of different sounds to the mix throughout, to the point where I didn’t know what was coming next. In my book, that’s what I’m looking for in in music. I like to be surprised. And since I haven’t caught them live before, this is going to be the debut live performance for me by Lost Orange Cat.
