Has it really been seven years since Milwaukee/Madison rock/Americana band Driveway Thriftdwellers released new music? “So it’s been seven years since we’ve released new music and we think that’s long enough,” the band said in a recent social media post. We guess so! And, judging by the sound of that new music, we agree!
Enter “Dance With You,” the first single from Driveway Thriftdwellers’ long-awaited new album High Top Van. It’s a decidedly pop-oriented tune, trading lap steel and twangy vocals for dreamy drum machines and arena-ready choruses. “I want to dance with you under the strawberry moon / I want to dance with you,” singer-guitarist Jon Knudson croons. It’s a slightly unexpected move for the band (Jon Knudson, Ryan Knudson, Kyle Rightley, Aaron Collins, Jon Storey), but it’s a well-suited and perfectly realized one. Listen to it now:
Knudson describes “Dance With You” as a “four-on-the-floor pop rock song that appeared unannounced during a writing session for another track on the album. The band’s plans changed that day as they allowed the uninvited guest to lead them to a sound they hadn’t known would appear on the new project.”
“Dance With You” and High Top Van were produced, recorded, and mixed by Ian Olvera, and mastered by Justin Perkins at Mystery Room Mastering. And while the full record contains one or two similar “pop” tracks, the majority of it is filled with familiar bar-time shit-kickers like “Thinking About Not Thinking About You” and “If Daddy’s Gonna Drink, Momma’s Gonna Dance.” (The latter comes complete with a Derek Pritzl shout-out.) Expect High Top Van—pop detours and all—in November.
