Walker’s Point is losing a terrific restaurant.

On Friday, the always delicious Ruta’s Fresh Indian Fare announced that it will be closing its Walker’s Point location at 207 W. Freshwater Way. The restaurant’s final day of business will be Thursday, April 30.

The reason for the closure? “Unfortunately, the rent is unaffordable,” Ruta’s says in a social media post.

Ruta’s opened in the now-defunct Crossroads Collective food hall in April 2021. At that time, it was known as Ruta’s Vibrant Indian Café. Two years later, owner Ruta Kahate left Crossroads and opened the Walker’s Point location.

Here’s what we had to say about Ruta’s in a 2025 Patreon post:

It’s been a while since I’ve eaten at and/or written about Ruta’s. Why? Because the last time I ate there and wrote about it (on Patreon!), the restaurant announced the very next day that it was leaving its two-year home at Crossroads Collective and searching for a new home. Well, that new home is 207 W. Freshwater Way, between Purple Door Ice Cream and Float Milwaukee. Ruta’s has been there since 2023.

Owner Ruta Kahate greeted me on my recent early afternoon visit. “First time?” she asked as I scanned the menu filled with soup, salads, bowls, and “na’anmelts” (“Invented here!”) “My first since you were at Crossroads!” I said. “Well, then it’s been too long!” Kahate laughed. I couldn’t have agreed more.

My order was a familiar favorite: a Hot Roast Chicken Na’anmelt with a cup of tomato and coconut soup. The melt was delicious, stuffed with chicken, kale, cheese, and the ideal number of pickled chilies for my mayo-and-white-bread taste buds. The soup was no-frills but perfect for dipping. Fantastic.

Will Ruta’s relocate? “Please follow us here for updates on our next moves!” reads the social media post. Fingers crossed.
