If you blinked during the tail end of 2019, you may have missed the coming and going of a lunch-only Shah Jee’s location at 228 W. Wells St. in Downtown Milwaukee. The spot opened in August 2019, but was permanently closed by January 2020. (Don’t worry: the original Jefferson Street location and the Downer Avenue expansion remain, and are incredible.) Happily, a new restaurant is set to take over the currently empty Wells Street storefront: India Palace.

According to a license application filed with the city, India Palace Downtown plans to bring Indian cuisine (along with beer and alcohol) to the spot seven days a week, from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. The sit-down restaurant will be a joint venture between Deepak Dhiman and Jagdish Patel. Dhiman is the operator of the India Palace in Franklin, located at 7107 S. 76th St. Patel, meanwhile, operates the Indian Kitchen & Grill food truck based in Waterford and Waukesha.

The Wells Street India Palace has a bar and bar seating on the east wall; the entire location can hold 50 people. A proposed opening date of August 2020 has already passed, so we’ll keep our eyes peeled for an updated date. Also, Vietnamese restaurant Xankia, which is right next door, is great.
