Looking for a roundup of Milwaukee food and drink news? Then take a bite of our cleverly titled, bi-weekly Food/Drink Roundup! This week: East Side businesses that need support while a whole bunch of construction goes on!

• Have you noticed all that irritating construction going on around E. North Avenue? You know, near Von Trier, Hooligan’s, Crossroads Collective, Landmark Lanes, Beans & Barley, and a dozen other East Side spots? It’s construction for permanent bike lanes and traffic calming measures, of course. It’s fine, but…yeah. Remember that old joke in The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy where the guy in charge of demolishing Arthur Dent’s house to make room for a bypass is like “What do you mean, why’s it got to be built? It’s a bypass. You’ve got to build bypasses.” That was almost 50 years ago. Sub in “bike lanes and traffic calming measures,” and you’ve got Milwaukee in 2024.

Anyway, all those East Side businesses are feeling the pinch from all that construction. According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Von Trier has cut some of its hours. Hooligan’s is at least considering doing the same. Beans is still smarting from COVID-19. Ugh.

So! Be sure to stop in and patronize these places! They’re great, and they need the business! And if you’re a pinball nut, Landmark recently got a rare Champion Pub machine, and their Bram Stoker’s Dracula table is perfect for this time of year!

Construction, by the way, is expected to continue through November 30. That’s, um, kind of a long time. ALL HAIL BIKE LANES. YOU’VE GOT TO BUILD BIKE LANES. [Milwaukee Journal Sentinel]

• Oh, and because we like to put our money where our mouths are, we got lunch at Beans & Barley today. It was super good! The balsamic chicken special was excellent! The egg salad sandwich was as good as ever! Our brandy/Brandy poster is in the entryway! Love you, Beans!
