Only a few months have passed since 414JungleBaby released her debut record JUNGLE THIS JUNGLE THAT. Back in May, the EP officially announced the young Milwaukee rapper as a 414 force to be reckoned with, garnering both hometown hype and “Best New Track” acclaim from Pitchfork (for single “Yo Baby”). Now, 414JungleBaby is back with a new mixtape and a new video.
First, the mixtape. Everybody Watching is an extended 9-track flex that plays like a late-summer hangover to JUNGLE THIS JUNGLE THAT‘s early-summer buzz. Opener “Block List” finds 414JungleBaby flaunting her hard-earned success and sticking it to her haters (“Just took them off my block list / They gonna have to watch this”), and doing it amidst a perfectly hazy and leaned-back track. “Doubling Back,” “Watching Jungle,” and the excellent “I’m Him” keep that vibe going, as do the rat-tat-tat “Fill Yo Cup” and the winning closer “Run & Gun.” The latter includes a feature from Philadelphia rapper Surf7; all of Everybody Watching includes 414JungleBaby’s sharp lyrics (“Why is n****s trying to be so nice / I don’t even like dudes”) and melodic, infectiously modulated vocals.
As for the video, the Kharkee-directed clip for “Movie” is pure house-party bliss. It’s fitting, of course: 414JungleBaby brought the party at the beginning of the summer, and she’s bringing it again at the end.
