For more than 60 years, Dobie’s Steak House (4136 S. Kinnickinnic Ave., 414-509-5807) has been the place to get steak and seafood in St. Francis. Sadly, the business will be closing this summer. The sudden and surprising closure was announced on the Dobie’s Steaks & More Facebook page on Tuesday afternoon. The statement reads:

“With heavy hearts, we announce the closure of Dobie’s Restaurant after 64 memorable years. Despite our best efforts, we can no longer continue. We thank our dedicated team and loyal customers. Please join us in our final week to honor Dobie’s legacy.”

Dobie’s originally started as a custard stand in 1954. In the early 1960s, the Doberstein family transformed the business into a steakhouse. In subsequent years, Dale Doberstein—the son of one of Dobie’s founders—and his wife Julie owned and operated the business before selling to chef Michael Fecker and retiring in early 2022.

In 2017, our fish fry columnist Caleb Westphal celebrated his 200th consecutive Friday fish fry at Dobie’s and was taken by the restaurant’s “excellent presentation, warm environment, very good service, and excellent homemade garlic butter chips.” Whether you want to pay Dobie’s one last visit or stop by for the first time before it’s gone, make sure to get there in the next few days.
