When we last checked in with Diaspora MKE, the oft-discussed/oft-delayed sports bar and lounge set to take over the former Company Brewing space at 735 E. Center St. in Riverwest was all systems go. But then, apparently, it wasn’t? But now, apparently, it’s all systems go again?

Yes, according to social media posts, Diaspora MKE will celebrate its grand opening on Tuesday, April 14—a.k.a. tomorrow, a.k.a. Milwaukee Day. Here’s an AI flyer:

“This isn’t just any date. April 14th is ‘414 Day,’ a celebration of everything that makes Milwaukee vibrant, creative, and uniquely ours,” reads the Facebook event. “It feels only right to open the doors of Diaspora MKE on a day dedicated to the spirit of the city we love. Join us as we cut the ribbon, raise a glass, and welcome a new space built for connection, culture, and community.”

Many of the Diaspora delays were due to the involvement of one of the co-owners, Marvin Bailey. Bailey is a former co-owner of Flame 13 restaurant and lounge, 2230 N. King Dr. In September 2025, the city’s Licenses Committee shut down Flame 13 for a full year, citing a mass brawl that occurred during an influencer event the previous July.

An earlier snag in Diaspora’s plans was due to another co-owner, Philyus Pullium. Pullium is an employee of the Milwaukee Police Department, and questions were raised about the legality of an active police officer holding a tavern license. Pullium has since removed himself from the ownership group.

In January, neighbors spoke out in favor, and against, Diaspora.

“My objection is not for a business opening in this location, but this specific operator,” neighbor Chris Olson said at the January meeting, referring to Bailey.

“I’ve seen other businesses do similar terrible things and still get licenses,” longtime Riverwest community activist Ruth Weill said at the same meeting. “I’ve been going to these meetings for close to 20 years. I do believe in second chances.”

According to its Facebook page, “Diaspora MKE is Milwaukee’s premiere destination for those who seek good music, food, elevated conversation, and a community without borders.”

Company Brewing closed suddenly in the space in May 2024, weeks after a nine-year anniversary block party.
