After 16 years in business, Water Street stalwart AJ Bombers will close its doors for good later this year.
Benson’s Restaurant Group, the owner and operator of AJ Bombers, made the announcement on Thursday. The company has decided not to renew its lease at 1247 N. Water St., which runs through late 2025.
“AJ Bombers has been a cornerstone in the Milwaukee community for the past 16 years, and it’s beloved by so many, including myself,” says David Marcus, CEO of Marcus Investments, owner of Benson’s Restaurant Group, in a press release. “This decision wasn’t an easy one but it’s one that made the most business sense for our restaurant group as we look to the future.
“Rest assured, for the next few months, we’ll be celebrating in style,” Marcus’ statement continues. “Expect tributes to our claims to fame, nods to previously retired menu items and so much more. While bittersweet, we look forward to giving this historic brand a fitting send off, with the help from the community.”
AJ Bombers opened on Water Street in 2009, under different ownership.
The press release also states that “all current AJ Bombers employees will have the opportunity to transfer to other Benson’s Restaurant Group restaurants upon the closing.” Those restaurants include The Bridgewater Modern Grill, The Edison, Onesto, Smoke Shack, and Blue Bat Kitchen & Tequilaria. Benson’s is also in the process of opening two new catering and events spaces with Milwaukee Athletic Club and Sandhill Tree Farm.
More details on the goodbye celebrations will be released soon. Until then, R.I.P. AJ Bombers. Well, R.I.P. later this year. You’ll be missed.
