In case you’ve missed the endless onslaught of media attention, robocalls, unsolicited text messages, attack ads, social media awfulness, and armchair political punditry from almost everyone around you, allow us to get you up to speed. There’s an election coming up here in America soon and there’s a whole lot at stake.
Well, if you’re anything like us, you’re probably looking for a mental break from worrying about “the most important election of our lifetime,” as November 5 approaches. And what better way to take your mind off an upcoming election than watching a film about, well, an election? That’s right! Less than two weeks before America makes its voice heard at the ballot box, we’ll be showing Election at Avalon Theater. Tickets to the Wednesday, October 23 screening are on sale NOW.
Directed by Alexander Payne, this dark 1999 comedy chronicles the lead up to (and fallout after) a student body election at a Nebraska high school that pits the overachieving Tracy Flick (played by Reese Witherspoon) against popular football player Paul Metzler (Chris Klein) and finds social studies teacher Jim McAllister (Matthew Broderick) trying/failing to maintain control of the proceedings and his life. Despite its modest box office performance, Election garnered great reviews, earned Oscar and Golden Globe nominations, and has become an undisputed cult classic that’s built a substantial following in the 25 years since its release.
As always, this 7 p.m. “Milwaukee Record Presents” Avalon screening is sponsored by our friends at Lakefront Brewery and Gruber Law Offices. Tickets are $11 and are on sale NOW. We want YOU to come to our Election screening at Avalon Theater on Wednesday, October 23.
