We’re mere weeks away from the 2025 Milwaukee Film Festival. The 17th annual fest will take over the Oriental and Downer theatres—along with other swaths of the East Side—April 24 through May 8. It’s gonna be great.

The MFF25 lineup includes 96 feature films, plus 112 short films in 13 shorts programs. That’s 35 fewer features and 57 fewer shorts than MFF24—but, to our eyes at least, the MFF25 lineup is the stronger of the two. There’s a LOT to see here. Some random personal highlights:

An Opening Night documentary on Sally Ride. A live-scored screening of 1922’s Nosferatu. A retro screening of Desperately Seeking Susan. Documentaries on Brady Street, Wisconsin Dells, the Green Bay punk rock scene, Pavement, Blur, Janis Ian, John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Art Spiegelman, Gallagher (!), Venus Xtravaganza, Linda Perry, Marlee Matlin, Peaches, The Black Keys, house music, and converted Pizza Hut locations (!)
