Parks and Culture Committee to Hear Report on the Future of the Mitchell Park Domes

MILWAUKEE – On Tuesday, September 12, 2023, the Committee on Parks and Culture will receive an informational report on the future of the Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory Park, better known as the Domes.

The hybrid meeting will convene at 9:00AM in Room 203-R of the Milwaukee County Courthouse. The report will be presented at approximately 11:00 a.m. and can be viewed on the County Legislative Information Center. Parks Committee Chair and County Supervisor Sheldon Wasserman made the following statement:

“I strongly believe that the future of the Domes must be decided in the near future. We cannot and should not continue to kick the can down the road on this important issue. After this report is received, a decision must be made that prioritizes the long-term future of the entire park. I look forward to reviewing the information with my fellow committee members and the public,” said Supervisor Wasserman. “Supervisors have heard loud and clear that the public wants a decision made. Following additional public engagement opportunities this fall, we intend to do just that.”

The report will discuss the Domes’ current lifespan, provide cost estimates and a detailed project scope for each option, explore implications of listing the Domes on the State or National Historic Registers, detail the expected lifespan of any improvements, outline known funding sources, and explain the project’s bonding eligibility.

Members of the public are encouraged to weigh in at Tuesday’s meeting. Interested individuals can register to speak in-person or virtually at Milwaukee.gov/testify.
