“Liminal spaces” are empty and disquieting locations that serve as transitions between two other locations or states of being. Think unused skywalks, hallways in abandoned malls, vacant streets, or airport terminals at 3 a.m. Liminal spaces are neither here nor there, places of waiting and anticipation. They’re kind of surreal and kind of creepy. They’re the kind of thing that the internet adores.

Is Milwaukee chock full of liminal spaces? Of course it is. Last spring, we took you on a photographic tour of some spaces we deemed to fall into the “liminal” category. Almost a year later, we’re ready to show you another collection of otherworldly and/or odd images of various spots around the city, organized by location. And yes, some of these might stretch your personal definition of “liminal” a bit, but they’re liminal to us, dammit!
