Losing a South Side Landmark
Statement of Alderman Mark A. Borkowski
January 26, 2021

The recent decision to close the iconic Serb Hall is another reminder of the devastation caused by the global COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic.

The location has hosted many political rallies of both stripes and was considered the “go-to place” to meet. This South Side landmark is nestled near the beautiful St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Cathedral, on the bustling corner of S. 51st and W. Oklahoma.

In addition to the many activities that were held at Serb Hall, their fish fries brought patrons from near and far. Good Friday dinners brought seemingly endless lines of vehicles to the drive-up window, drawing media coverage, including local TV news helicopters!

It was the place to be, and to be seen.

I am proud to represent this area and am forever grateful to the always welcoming St. Sava Serbian community.

I look forward to continuing to help maintain this important location as a viable commercial entity for the betterment of the City of Milwaukee.
