It has probably happened to you at some point. You’re out in public just living your life when a stranger encounters you and confidently asserts you’re someone else entirely. Sometimes it’s their old co-worker or a childhood friend. Other times it’s a comparison to a celebrity or public figure, which can have both positive or negative impacts on your self esteem. And if you’re Aymen Saleh—the English-born singer/songwriter and bandleader of Milwaukee’s Holy Pinto—you might be confused for Mac DeMarco.
Saleh’s very specific case of mistaken identity is at the center of a brand new Holy Pinto song. Released today, “Mac DeMarco (i can’t be)” chronicles a true story of the UK musician being erroneously likened to the lo-fi Canadian musician, despite sharing no physical or musical resemblance with the indie rock contemporary. Oh yeah, and a border agent was the person responsible for the Mac-related mix up, which added a little tension to the awkward exchange.
The sub-four-minute track has a delicate bedroom pop-tinged sound, a catchy and rousing chorus, and lyrics that are both self-effacing and funny (especially knowing Saleh was able to successfully get back into the country). Even if he’s not Mac DeMarco, we think you’ll enjoy Holy Pinto’s new single. You can watch the video below (and listen to the song pretty much anywhere you can stream music).
