Dial the ol’ Wayback Machine to the early ’00s and you’ll likely run into one of Milwaukee’s most popular hip-hop groups of the day, Black Elephant. “They grinded harder than just about any other act,” Radio Milwaukee said about Black Elephant in a 2019 roundup of the 10 most important songs in Milwaukee rap history, “and thanks to their Roots-esque band setup, they had a better live show than just about any other act, too.”
The group—Verbal (Derrick Harriell), Element (Element Everest-Blanks), and Dameon (Dameon Ellzey)—released its debut record in 2002. Two years later saw the release of Eat This Album, a 17-track tour de force that proved to be Black Elephant’s masterpiece.
That record—now 20 years old!—will be the focus of a one-night-only Black Elephant reunion show, Friday, November 29 at The Cooperage. What to expect from the show? According to a press release…
Fans can expect a powerful, nostalgia-filled evening as Black Elephant’s vocalists—Everest, Ellzey, and Harriell—reunite with the original members of their instrumental band: bassist Alex Julien, drummer Mike Evans, and keyboardist Anthony Martin. The renowned guitarist for national acts such as Mary J. Blige and Jill Scott, Shon Hinton (Shon Hinton & Shotgun), will join them, adding a new dimension to the classic lineup. The event will also feature music curated by DJ Bizzon, creating a unique mashup of tracks from Eat This Album and classic hip-hop hits.
The show will begin at 8 p.m. and doors will open at 7. General admission tickets are $35. Get them HERE.
