In case you somehow, improbably, impossibly missed it, the current Milwaukee Public Museum will close its doors at 800 W. Wells St. on January 3, 2027. Then, sometime in early 2027, the new Nature & Culture Museum of Wisconsin will open its doors at 1310 N. 6th St. and officially take MPM’s place.

A handful of MPM dioramas and items have already been “deinstalled” in order to make the move to NCMW. On Tuesday, MPM announced even more deinstallations for the summer—including the Silurian Reef diorama that damn Howler Monkey, and the Beaver Habitat. Oh, and stuff in the Streets of Old Milwaukee’s Apothecary.

Here are the details, via MPM:

• Late June/Early-Mid-July: “The Silurian Reef diorama and Howler Monkey on the First Floor, along with some of the animals in the Wisconsin Woodlands Hall on the Second Floor, including the Beaver Habitat diorama, will be deinstalled for cleaning and repairs before going on display at NCMW. In the new Museum, the Silurian Reef diorama will be refreshed and installed in the Time Travel gallery. The Beaver Habitat diorama and the Wisconsin Woodlands animals will be on display in the Winifred & Spencer Kellogg Gallery: Wisconsin Journey, while the Howler Monkey finds a new home in the We Energies Foundations Gallery: Rainforest.”

• Early August: “Items and cabinetry in the Apothecary in the Streets of Old Milwaukee exhibit will be removed to be prepared for installation in NCMW. The Apothecary building facade will remain intact in Streets. The Apothecary items, including bottles of medicines and wood cabinetry, will be installed in the Pharmacy exhibit in the Milwaukee Revealed gallery.”

Yes, The Quest for Beaver is truly over.

MPM says the majority of the deinstallations will take place after the museum closes in January 2027. Exact dates and timing for desinstallations, MPM says, are fluid.
