Sad news for crime and/or awesome bookstore fans: Mystery One Bookstore (2109 N. Prospect Ave., 414-347-4077), the long-running hole-in-the-wall serving up crime and mystery fiction on Milwaukee‘s East Side, will be closing at the end of August. According to a post on Crimespree Magazine, owner Richard Katz will shutter the brick-and-mortar location in the next few weeks, though he will maintain an Internet-based store. Katz plans on going out with a bang (heh), however, with events on Thursday, August 27 and Friday, August 28, as well as a day-long party on Saturday, August 29. Here’s the info straight from Katz:

“Now for some different news, Mystery One will be closing at the end of August (or maybe September). We will continue to be an online store. August, 27th, 28th, and 29th (Thursday, Friday, Saturday) we will have a party with all books discounted, so come and get books at fantastic prices. My love goes out to all of you who helped Mystery One have a wonderful 23 year run. Everyone please come in by the end of the month.”

Mystery One opened in April 1993. It leaves behind a terrific legacy and a beautiful, bullet-ridden corpse.
