Let’s vote on when the Marcus Center snow pile(s) will melt THIS year

Some Milwaukee things come and go, while some become icons. Mandatory Milwaukee is all about the latter. This week: the Marcus Center snow pile!

It’s spring. It appears that any significant snowstorms are more or less behind us (for now). It appears that new life is set to return and that the soul-crushing tedium of winter is set to fade into memory (for now). So you know what that means:

LET’S VOTE ON WHEN THE MARCUS CENTER SNOW PILE WILL MELT THIS YEAR.

You know the pile. It’s that big snow pile on the side of the Marcus Performing Arts Center parking structure in Downtown Milwaukee, 929 N. Water St. The one that’s created by snow being plowed through a gap in the fence on the parking structure’s top floor. The one we’ve been keeping track of for years. The one that, yes, is still available in T-shirt form.

It’s been a wild 2025-26 season for the pile. Here it was on December 1, 2025:

And today, March 27, 2026:

So when will it melt THIS year? In 2025, it bit the big one early, on March 26. In 2024, April 15. In 2023, April 30. In both 2022 and 2021, April 8. We probably have records going even further back, but knowing the exact dates for the past five years is sad enough.

Oh, and did you notice we said “pile(s)” in the headline? That’s because there’s a SECOND Marcus Center snow pile, this one on the south wall of the parking structure on State Street. Here it is today, on March 27, 2026:

We’ve politely acknowledged this pile in the past, but because it’s so massive this year—bigger than the Water Street pile!—we’re giving it its own poll. Yep, we’re keeping track of TWO piles! MAYBE THIS WILL FINALLY SHAKE LOOSE A MILWAUKEE PRESS CLUB AWARD. A BOY CAN DREAM.
