Acclaimed comedian and actress to join the 2023 Cultures & Communities Festival line-up in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month

MILWAUKEE – Wednesday, July 19, 2023 – In celebration of the convergence between Hispanic Heritage Month (Sep. 15-Oct. 15) and the 2023 Cultures & Communities Festival (Oct. 5-12), Milwaukee film is welcoming standup comedian, producer, and actress Aida Rodriguez, whose “Don’t @ Me Tour” stops at Milwaukee Improv for an evening full of laughs featuring some of the funniest Latinx comedians from around the midwest.

“I’m looking forward to coming to Milwaukee to celebrate Latine Heritage Month with laughter.” Rodriguez shares. “This tour has been about bringing joy to people, and this is the perfect stop for just that.”

Lauded by Esquire Magazine as “raucously funny,” Aida Rodriguez has become a favorite with fans and critics alike. In November 2021, Aida’s first standup special, Fighting Words, premiered on HBOMax. In the special, the comedian takes to the stage to address today’s audiences about cancel culture and the social issues of the day, not just because they’re ripped from the headlines, but because they are in the pages torn out of her personal life. Additionally, Rodriguez is developing her own comedy series with HBOMax based on her own incredible life story, which includes surviving two kidnappings, sexual abuse, and a period of homelessness.

Co-written and Executive Produced by Rodriguez, Chris Case (Showtime’s Flatbush Misdemeanors), and Nastaran Dibai (Netflix’s Dear White People), the project examines the struggle of a comedian (Rodriguez) who is trying to kick start a career while raising two very different teenagers on her own over multiple time zones. “I have been able to turn the story of my life into comedy,” Rodriguez told the LA Times last year. “The things I thought I couldn’t survive became the bits that made me who I am as a comedian.”

“As an event curator, I’m incredibly excited about Hispanic Heritage Month and the Cultures & Community Festival coming together to bring more diverse programming to Milwaukee!” Enthuses Adilene Quezada, Milwaukee Film’s Cine Sin Fronteras Program Ambassador. “We’re honored to have Aida Rodriguez stop by during her ‘Don’t @ Me Tour,’ where she opens up about being Afro-Latinx. This is our time to reflect on our culture and share our experiences with one another, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to do it communally while sharing some laughs!”

Esquire Magazine has declared, “This is Rodriguez’s genius—using comedy to turn pain into progress, to give voice to the voiceless, and to laugh instead of cry.” She tours the country performing her distinct brand of poignant and insightful comedy to sold-out audiences, inviting her longtime fans to laugh hard, think hard, and feel hard.

This transformative night of comedy happens Tuesday, October 10th at Milwaukee Improv (A 21+ venue – 20110 Lower Union Street, Brookfield, WI). Tickets are $25 for General Admission and $20 for Milwaukee Film Members and are on sale now via
