Before he was Kenny Powers, Neil Gamby, Jesse Gemstone, or part of the Alien cinematic universe, Danny McBride first made his mark as Fred Simmons—a small town Taekwondo instructor with an inflated ego and a destructive marriage—in The Foot Fist Way. We’re screening it at Avalon Theater on Wednesday, July 15 and tickets are on sale NOW.
The daaaaark and raunchy comedy is both McBride’s first starring role in a feature film and the directorial debut of his longtime collaborator Jody Hill. Though The Foot Fist Way made its Sundance debut in early 2006, it didn’t reach widespread comedic consciousness until Will Ferrell and Adam McKay got their hands on a copy of the film and stepped in as distributors in 2008. The 85-minute flick has it all: action, a flawed-yet-identifiable underdog quite literally fighting adversity and overcoming the odds, and hilarious dialogue delivered in a distinctly Danny McBride-y cadence.
Was this the archetype for Kenny Powers? Absolutely. Have you ever seen this Eastbound & Down progenitor on the big screen (if at all)? Probably not! Well, that can all change if you come to Avalon Theater on Wednesday, July 15. Do it! As always, this 7 p.m. screening is sponsored by Lakefront Brewery, Gruber Law Offices, and Skilos: A Family Pet Store. Get those tickets NOW!
BUT THERE’S MORE!!! Immediately after the movie, we’ll be heading to Blackbird Bar for a “Post Credit” event, which will feature “Danny McBridal Shower” activities and a pinball tournament with prizes from Milwaukee Record and WYNK for top performers. Watch The Foot Fist Way and then come hang with us at Blackbird from 9-? (probably 11, but maybe later!).
