Last fall, Milwaukee’s premier “emo-adjacent rock melancholia” group Bug Moment released a terrific new single, “Arbiter.” The band followed it with the fantastic “Purple Guy.” And now comes the dramatic (and terrific/fantastic) “Chaos Emerald.” See the connection?

Yep, each song title is a reference to a video game (Halo, Five Nights At Freddy’s, Sonic The Hedgehog). Oh, and each song will appear on Bug Moment’s upcoming EP, The Lazer Collection. The five-song record will be the group’s first since 2023’s The Flying Toad Circus LP.

But before we get to The Lazer Collection, let’s listen to “Chaos Emerald.” The blistering track finds Jasmine Rosenblatt (vocals), Gray Edward (guitar), Elias Dorsey (bass), and Aidan Hoppens (drums) once again pulling from a host of eclectic influences: emo, rock, hyper-pop, nu-metal, anime soundtracks, more. The resulting mix is alternately gorgeous and gnarly, emotional and eviscerating. It’s really, really good. Love those metal screams!

The Lazer Collection is due March 7, and a release show is set for March 8 at Cactus Club. Fingers crossed for an Elden Ring song! (Okay, we cheated; we already know there’s going to be an Elden Ring song.)
