In case you missed it, the Mitchell Park Conservatory Domes Task Force recently capped off nearly three years (!) of work by approving an “extensive, $66 million proposal to restore the Domes and turn Mitchell Park into a multi-faceted facility.” Among other things, the proposal includes a “restoration of the domes as well as an expansion of the area into an urban botanical park complete with a full-service restaurant, wedding garden, amphitheater, research and learning facilities and outdoor trails and tennis courts.” Neat!

Where is that $66 million supposed to come from? The Milwaukee Business Journal explains:

Funding for the project would come in three parts: $13.5 million from the private sector, $13.5 million from Milwaukee County and $39 million from tax credits and opportunity zone investment.

The Milwaukee County funds would be $1 million less than the cost to tear down the domes, which the Milwaukee Public Museum Task Force recommended back in March.

Wanna hear more about the proposal and offer your own thoughts? Well buckle up, because on Wednesday, September 18, the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing regarding the plan. Folks are invited to show up at the Mitchell Park Domes Annex, 524 S. Layton Blvd., at 5 p.m. for an informal “open house,” followed by a presentation at 6 p.m. Public comment/yelling will round out the evening.

Here’s a press release! R.I.P. the idea of installing an indoor zipline in the Domes.

The Board of Supervisors established the Mitchell Park Conservatory Domes Task Force in 2016 to develop a comprehensive long-term plan for the repair and preservation of the Domes.
