In an incredibly tight outcome that wasn’t settled until the early hours of Wednesday morning, David Crowley edged out Francesca Hong to become the Democratic candidate in the race for Wisconsin governor.
With 98% of votes counted Wednesday morning, Crowley appears to have defeated Hong by little more than 3,000 votes.
Crowley will face Republican primary winner Tom Tiffany in the general election on November 3.
“David Crowley is grateful to Wisconsin voters, the volunteers who powered this campaign, and everyone who stepped forward to participate in this primary,” said Crowley campaign manager Garren Randolph in a 2:25 a.m. statement. “To Francesca, Kelda, Joel, and every candidate who shared their vision for Wisconsin, thank you. They challenged all of us to think bigger about what our state can become.”
Crowley’s upset win capped off a chaotic campaign in which he dropped out and reentered the race, polled behind Hong, and was forced to address an old Dirt McGirk Twitter account.
“Now, David is focused on bringing people together, earning the support of Democrats, Republicans, Independents, and anyone who believes Wisconsin is at its best when we work together and deliver results,” Randolph continued in his statement. “The choice in November has always been clear. We can move Wisconsin forward with leadership focused on solving problems, or we can bring the division and extremism of Tom Tiffany and Donald Trump to Wisconsin.”
Meanwhile, the San Diego Padres beat up on the Milwaukee Brewers Tuesday night at Petco Park. A poor outing from Brewers starting pitcher Kyle Harrison set the Crew on a rocky path that featured a grand slam from former teammate Luis Rengifo, among other indignities. The Padres triumphed 11-2.
The Brewers still claim the best record in all of Major League Baseball, 74-46. In the NL Central, a Chicago Cubs win over the Washington Nationals on Tuesday put the Cubs within four games of the Brewers.
