Crowley: Republican Governors Association Doubles Down on Its Preferred Candidate With Another Six Figure Ad Buy, Bringing Total Wisconsin Spending to $3.6 Million
Milwaukee, WIs. — The Republican Governors Association (RGA) is escalating its unprecedented effort to influence Wisconsin’s Democratic gubernatorial primary, launching another six-figure television advertising buy in support of the candidate Republicans have chosen as their preferred general election opponent.
With the new investment, the RGA has now committed $3.6 million to shape Wisconsin’s Democratic primary. At the same time, Republicans are spending an additional $1,500 to maintain a campaign-style website dedicated to defining and promoting their preferred Democratic candidate.
David Crowley, candidate for governor, said the latest spending leaves no doubt about what Republicans are trying to accomplish.
“Every time Republicans spend another dollar in our Democratic primary, they’re telling Wisconsin voters exactly who they want to face in November,” Crowley said. “This is no longer speculation. They’ve now spent $3.6 million trying to influence our nomination because they believe they’ve found the opponent they want. Democrats should make their own decision, not the one Tom Tiffany and the Republican Governors Association are spending millions to engineer.”
The new television ad buy comes just days after new polling showed Crowley surging into second place after re-entering the Democratic primary. In the last week, Crowley has announced a six figure ad buy, several union and mayoral endorsements, and reported raising over $550,000 in just five days.
“They’re making this investment because they know I’m the candidate they don’t want to face in November,” Crowley said. “I’ve spent my career delivering progressive results, I’ve earned the support of Wisconsin’s labor movement, and I’m proud to have the backing of one of the country’s most popular Democratic governors. Republicans know I can build the coalition it takes to win and govern. That’s why they’re spending millions trying to prop up someone they believe they can beat instead. Their strategy isn’t about choosing the strongest Democrat. It’s about avoiding one they’re afraid to run against.”
Crowley said the effort follows a national Republican strategy of intervening in Democratic primaries by boosting candidates they believe will be easier to defeat in the general election.
“Tom Tiffany and the Republican Governors Association don’t get a vote in our primary,” Crowley concluded. “Wisconsin Democrats should decide this election based on who can win in November and govern on day one, not based on who Republican strategists in Washington are spending millions to promote.”
The Democratic Primary for Governor will be held on August 11, 2026. More information about David Crowley and his campaign can be found at CrowleyforWI.com.
