Wednesday was a busy year in the Democratic primary for Wisconsin governor. Let’s dive right in! (And yes, all of this happened today.)
• A new Marquette University Law School poll of 838 registered voters—including 430 Democrats—shows Francesca Hong leading the Democratic primary for Wisconsin governor. However, the poll was conducted July 8-16—a.k.a. after David Crowley left the race, but before he returned. So, Crowley’s name wasn’t included in the poll. This happened today.
• A new Public Policy Polling poll that was conducted July 21-22—a.k.a. after Crowley returned—shows that if the primary election was held today, and Crowley and Hong were the only candidates, 39% would vote for Crowley, and 38% would vote for Hong. Twenty-two percent were unsure. The PPP poll surveyed “708 likely Democratic primary voters for the Crowley campaign.” This happened today.
• The Crowley campaign announced a six-figure TV ad buy. This happened today.
• NBC News released an exclusive story that digs into an old Twitter account registered to Crowley, which was active from 2010 to 2014. The account, @No_pork_plz / “Dirt McGirk,” contains posts that range from “mundane to offensive,” says NBC News. Some examples:
“That’s just NASTY!!!” the account posted in May 2010. “I wouldn’t f– her with YOUR d–!!!!” #slapyourself”
Another message said, “only n— like you have #gaythoughts LOL fuggin tamberine player LOL” One post states: “#confession I’ve never boink a white woman!! Is that bad???”
And yet another post stated “if you refer *N– & B—* to *Obamas & Michelles… Then You’re #d– ridingobama”
Crowley has disavowed and denied responsibility for the posts. According to NBC News, “a campaign spokesperson contended Crowley shared access to the account with others and that it was launched to help promote a troubled, now shuttered, Milwaukee bar and social club called Onyx, and potentially other clubs.” This happened today.
• And finally, Milwaukee’s own Sid McCain—a.k.a. the daughter of the late Sen. John McCain—has announced her support for Francesca Hong. Here’s McCain’s full statement. This happened today.
I am throwing my full support behind Francesca Hong for Governor of Wisconsin.
Our country is moving further and further to the far right, and the stakes could not be higher. Fundamental freedoms and the dignity of our most vulnerable are all being challenged. This is not the time for cautious politics or backroom decisions. It is a time for courage.
Shame on you, Tony Evers and the Democratic Party of Wisconsin for ignoring the voice of the people of Wisconsin. For bringing County Executive Crowley back in when he obviously did not want to run.
Francesca Hong has done the work. She has shown up. Political insiders do not drive her campaign; the people drive it.
If we are serious about pushing back against the far-right movement that is reshaping our country, we cannot settle for politics as usual. We need leaders who are willing to stand up, speak out, and fight for a more just and inclusive Wisconsin. I believe Francesca Hong is that leader.
I am asking Democrats, independents, and every Wisconsinite who believes in democracy and opportunity for all to join me in supporting Francesca Hong for Governor. Wisconsin has an opportunity to lead, not by following the politics of fear and division, but by union and hope for a better future.

The primary election for Wisconsin governor (and lieutenant governor) is August 11. The current-as-of-Wednesday Democratic candidates are Crowley, Hong, Joel Brennan, Kelda Roys, and Mandela Barnes. The Republican candidates are Tom Tiffany and Andy Manske.
After the primaries, the general election is scheduled for November 3.
