Supervisor Martinez Budget Amendment Advances “Domes Reimagined” Proposal
MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee County Board’s Finance Committee has unanimously approved a 2025 budget amendment advancing the “Domes Reimagined” proposal for the Mitchell Park Domes. Authored by Supervisor Juan Miguel Martinez, the amendment now moves to the full County Board for final approval. The proposal outlines a public-private partnership to ensure the Domes’ long-term financial and structural sustainability, while reducing Milwaukee County’s operational and maintenance responsibilities.
The “Domes Reimagined” plan, developed by the Friends of the Domes group, is a two-phase, $134 million project funded through a capital campaign, tax credit programs, federal and state grants, and a $30 million commitment from Milwaukee County. The project will restore the Domes, improve energy efficiency, and introduce new park amenities, including enhanced accessibility. These upgrades are projected to boost revenue from admissions, events, retail sales, educational programs, and a new café.
Supervisor Martinez, whose district includes the Domes, commented: “The Domes are a Milwaukee landmark, important not only to my district but the entire community. This plan is the best option to preserve and improve this space, make it safer, and instill pride in our community. I appreciate my colleagues for recognizing the significance of this project.”
The amendment authorizes the Parks Department to work with the Office of Corporation Counsel to develop a formal agreement with the Friends of the Domes, which will be reviewed by the County Board. The agreement is expected to include a long-term lease, placing the Friends in charge of operations while Milwaukee County retains ownership of Mitchell Park. Milwaukee County will commit $30 million over six years, with funds contingent on meeting specific benchmarks. A project update is expected by May 2025.
Final approval of Milwaukee County’s financial contribution will be part of the 2026 budget process, with the first $5 million installment allocated in fiscal year 2026.
The full Board will vote on the amendment during the annual budget adoption meeting on November 7, 2024.
