Milwaukee music fans may not be familiar with Mol Sullivan because, well, she’s not from Milwaukee. Sullivan is a Cincinnati singer-songwriter whose catalog stretches back to the early 2010s. It was only in early 2024, however, that she released a full-length record, Goose. The album is a treasure trove of delicately woozy indie rock, full of songs that grapple with heartbreak, self-reflection, and sobriety. It’s fantastic.
Oh, and a new video from Goose, “Cautiously,” was shot in Milwaukee! Directed by Sullivan and Milwaukee musician/producer Josh Evert, the video finds Sullivan standing still—very still—in a number of disparate settings.
“The concept for the ‘Cautiously’ music video came about after experiencing a series of depressive freezes after a partner had moved out of the house,” Sullivan says. “I realized while I stood motionless in my living room for what seemed like 20 minutes, that I had been suspended in several little vignettes around the house that day—locked in a stare, mind blank—while trying to put the pieces of my life back together. Some of these scenes are mid-action, attention taken away from whatever activity, caught in that state of being firmly planted while somehow slipping out of body.”
Sullivan and her band are in Milwaukee for the next week and a half, recording a new record at Evert’s Silver City Studios. Evert calls Sullivan’s stay a “residency,” and sees it as a calling card for other artists outside of Milwaukee.
“When we initially discussed this, we talked about maybe doing shows, but ultimately she decided to focus on recording,” Evert says. “Silver City Studios is hoping to use this as a model for getting more out-of-town artists to Milwaukee to record.”
