Give Milwaukee band Bunk Bed credit for taking its sweet time. The math-y and art-y indie group released its two-song debut, Top Bunk, Bottom Bunk, back in 2022. A video for one of the tracks, “Bum,” appeared a year later; a year after that, the remaining song, “Crowd And Judgement,” got its own video. So, um, when can we expect something new from Bunk Bed?
Turns out, right now! Behold “Sweetie,” the first single from Bunk Bed’s upcoming full-length record Roughhousing. The nearly five-minute song is a journey: a Pink Floyd-esque psych workout one second, a jittery and whacked-out jam the next. Toss in the occasional death metal scream and you’ve got an all-over-the-map winner:
“Named after the 1989 Australian film with similar themes, ‘Sweetie’ is a song about difficult relationships, about the people who you love with self-destructive tendencies and, despite your best interest, you keep coming back to,” Bunk Bed explains in a press release. “The middle section of the song speaks of the sleazy pickup artist, charming in their way, that keeps a stranglehold on your thoughts. And in the end, we all end up screaming, again and again.”
Roughhousing, recorded by Shane Hochstetler at Howl Street Recordings and mastered by Carl Saff at Saff Mastering, is expected this fall. New Bunk Bed! Yay!
