The tail end of 2025 was a brutal time for Milwaukee businesses. The National Cafe announced its immediate closure. Pomona Cider Co. announced its near-immediate closure. Beans & Barley announced its impending closure on January 31. And numerous other businesses issued a call for help, imploring folks to stop in and spend a few bucks to avoid any further closures. Grim times.

In all the chaos we overlooked another impending closure. On New Year’s Eve, celebrated Third Ward restaurant Bavette La Boucherie, 217 N. Broadway, announced that its final day of service will be Saturday, January 17. Ugh.

Here’s the social media message from owner Karen Bell:

As we come to the end of the year, we are also nearing the end of our chapter. After 13 incredible years of being a part of this amazing community, I have made the bittersweet decision to close the restaurant.

This has not been an easy choice. The true success of this restaurant was not measured in numbers, but in the moments shared here—the celebrations, the laughter, and the connections formed over the years. Those experiences mean more to me than anything else.

The reason for this decision is a personal one. After many years of dedication to the restaurant, I am ready to step back and spend more time with my family—time that has become increasingly precious.

I am deeply grateful to every guest who walked through the doors, every regular who became family, and every member of the team who helped make this journey so special. Being part of this community has truly been the greatest reward.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for 13 unforgettable years. Your continued support over the years is what allowed this restaurant to grow and thrive, and the memories we created together will stay with me always.

January 17 will be our final day of service, and we would be honored to welcome you one last time.

With gratitude,
Karen
