Some Milwaukee things come and go, while some become icons. Mandatory Milwaukee is all about the latter. This week: Farmers Markets!
The time has finally come. After a long, unforgiving winter and a start-and-stop first six weeks of spring, we’ve finally reached the beginning of the best time to live in Milwaukee. May brings about the beginning of the city’s festival season, the opening of pretty much every beer garden (both permanent and traveling), and a full-blown patio renaissance outside bars and restaurants as we finally accept there will be no more snow for a few months…probably. Another amazing aspect of being in and around Milwaukee in May is the beginning of farmers market season.

Starting the first weekend of this month and continuing as late as late October (and into November in a couple cases), the city and pretty much every suburb in Milwaukee County will host an abundance of farmers markets. Beyond the access to fresh and locally grown produce, market attendees can enjoy fare from area food trucks, browse hometown retail goods, and even be treated to free live music performances in some cases—all while spending time in a variety of outdoor spaces.
The West Allis, Oak Creek, and Greenfield markets all kicked off last weekend. The Fondy Farmers Market will officially usher in the spring/summer farmers market season here in Milwaukee proper on Saturday, May 9 before things really get into full swing at more than a dozen places in June.
